Scholarship Program

Components

Her Turn is a scholarship program designed to provide sport opportunities to young girls within the Brookings community who may not otherwise have the chance. Recipients of a Her Turn scholarship are able to attend an SDSU athletic camp of their choice at no cost to their families. Each scholarship covers three essential components: camp entry fees, equipment, and transportation. These components were chosen intentionally, based on extensive research into the most common barriers that prevent girls from accessing sports.

✓ Camp Entry Fees - The cost to attend the camp. ($290-375)

✓ Gear Bags - Gear bags include sports specific equipment, athletic clothes, toiletries, and snacks.($150-300)

✓ Transportation - We provide transportation to and from camp as needed. (Volunteer)

Nutrition Resources

This year, we were thrilled to partner with Errin Short, a registered dietitian at former SDSU Jackrabbit. Errin provided our scholarship recipients with healthy, nutritious snacks to fuel them throughout their camps. In addition, she created a virtual “Her Turn Power-Up Guide” that shared nutrition tips with each participant. This guide was filled with accessible, age-appropriate information about nutrition and healthy habits. Not only did this support their experience at camp, but we hope it also provides knowledge they can carry with them far beyond their sporting participation.

Camp Experience

While each sport camp varies slightly, they all share a similar structure. Basketball, volleyball, and soccer camps are three-day overnight camps where participants stay in the SDSU dorms, eat in the college dining hall, and attend multiple sport-specific sessions each day. Softball camps are offered in single day sessions. Her Turn scholarship recipients are able to attend a one-day middle school camp as well as two separate hitting or pitching clinics of their choice.

Ensuring a positive experience at camp is our top priority for our scholarship recipients. In the survey we send out at the end of each camp season, campers and their families rated their experience an impressive 9.5 out of 10. While we certainly hope they are able to improve their sport-skills, there is so much more to be gained in this experience. Our recipients have the opportunity to spend time on a college campus, interact with inspiring female role models, and develop important life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and perseverance.
